Wii U and it's online multiplayer 3 years on

Can I play online with U

One of the best multiplayer experiences of 2015 is only on Wii U

You may have seen by now on various other sites that the Wii U has just had its 3rd birthday in North America and will be also celebrating it soon in Europe. I could give you something like everyone else what’s good or bad about the Wii U, the great games on the system and we will be touching on the great games soon with a vote over on the GNamer forum.

What I want to talk about is multiplayer more specifically online multiplayer, this all came about from me recently buying Devil’s Third for my Wii U collection. The game hasn’t had the best of reviews but the multiplayer had been the one positive it seemed. That when I got the game, the first thing I did was go the multiplayer and after about 20 minutes of trying and only seeing two other people online & you need more than 3 people, that I never got a game.

I posted on GNamer forum my frustration and if this isn’t getting played on the Wii U, what about the likes of Assassin’s Creed III which was a launch game, that must be dead.

With a few replies from member of the forum it gave me an idea, to try out my games which have multiplayer and see what the communities are like and is online multiplayer alive & well on the Wii U.

I started off with my eShop games, I had two games with multiplayer Art of Balance which put me in a game right away with someone from the states. Played the match and lost 3-1 but was fine the next game wasn’t as good but there were games in Trine 2: Director's Cut, as I didn’t want to spoil anyone’s game in this CO-OP adventure by coming in then dropping right out, I checked to see if there were games going in the lobby and there were 2 games going on. Which isn’t great but still you could get game in from level 12 or 14 (I think).

I would be the left hand side

Now onto the retail side of things, I’m going to start off by going through the games I did get joy out of not from Nintendo.

Starting with Assassin’s Creed III, which is coming to being 3 years old the Wii U that I thought I wouldn’t find anything and I doubted there would even be servers still. Well I was wrong, I found a game right away via quick search there did only seem to be 4 games for it search through but still I got a game of this buggy mess, I was on the losing side again.

The Wii U has two Call of Duty’s first up was Black Ops II which had over 2,000 people playing that I could have played any of the modes but had a quick bash on Team Death Match which was rather odd going from the far quicker recent Black Ops III on PS4 to this but it was still a blast and I was second on our team, no wonder we lost.

Confirmed to be great

Then it was Ghosts turn which only had just over 550 people on which was enough to play most modes, again went for Team Death Match and I was finally on the winning side.

I was trying all these games in alphabetical order that the next successful game was Devil’s Third. I went right into a game via auto matching and to make sure it wasn’t a fluke, soon as that match was over I came out and selected auto again, I got right into a game. It did seem to be the same 8 people that I wouldn’t be surprised, that if I did come out again waited a minute or two then went for auto match that it would be with same lot of people. The two games of multiplayer I did play was rather enjoyable that I hope next time I can get games.

Games that weren’t enjoyable Injustice: Gods Among Us, as Ranked was the first option I selected that as a level 1 thought I’d get a similar opponent, nope a level 60 who beat me in a matter of seconds but I did get a game right away.

One of my favourite types of Multiplayer is cooperative but not like Trine 2’s but like Mass Effect 3’s enemy wave based game. This I did get a game on but had some issues after I made my character and selected quick play, I was put into a game then after about 5 seconds I lost connection and put back to the menu. I selected quick play again and was put back into the same game which ended about 10secs after I joined for a second time. I didn’t try a third time but I may have ended in the same game or people or maybe continue to have issues but others clearly were playing it.

Sticking with EA for a minute, next was Need for Speed Most Wanted U which remains one of if not the best ports to the console as it looks fantastic and finding people was easy. I just select multiplayer and there I was with a full lobby of racers driving around the city crashing into each other.

Next was game like with Trine 2, I didn’t want to join someone’s hunt & leave in Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate which by my count had 400+ people on in various lobbies that I could have easily gone on a hunt.

On Nintendo’s offerings like of Mario Kart 8, recently released Mario Tennis and Splatoon etc were all easy to get games on and seemed rather active but one wasn’t and to start of the games Multiplayer wasn’t so good on is Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Winter Games.

I selected GB of course for my country and we are ranked 3rd for snowboarding that I decide to give that a whirl but after a while my search timed out. They may have been people playing in the other modes but I moved on.

I didn't get to climax with someone

I didn't get to climax with someone

Another a few that I may have got games on if I was patient are Bayonetta 2 in its multiplayer mode tag climax, which is CO-OP missions. I selected quick game and it was going to pair me with someone who then didn’t accept at their end, I tried again & the same thing happened. That I looked at what games were going under the lobbies and there were 5 games, I tried to join the player doing D rank missions or something but again wasn’t accepted at their end.

FIFA 13 this seemed to have 240 people online with 18 in online matches, that I thought I got a good chance of getting a game but after trying quick game twice nothing.

But it did show signs of life as Ninja Gaiden 3: Razors Edge, Resident Evil: Revelations, Splinter Cell: Black List all let me search for game or check out lobbies but there seemed to be no one playing any of them but at least servers are up, if you do want to play.

This is dead, but good music though

As surprisingly seeing the 3rd was easy to find a game on that Assassins Creed IV Black Flag seems to no longer have online functions from the Ubisoft message which comes up. The only other game like this was NBA 2K13 which soon as you load up the game a message from Nintendo pops up saying online no longer available

I did want to try Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper & Watch Dogs but both seem to need you to unlock the multiplayer, I would have liked to try to see if anyone was playing.

From my 3 hours of messing around there does seem to be a few games where will have no issue playing at any time and some you’ll just have to hope for the best.
